I, however, have to remind my august students: La Musica merita d’esser studiata – Music deserves to be studied.
Ludwig van Beethoven

25 Years of Achievements

The current principal of the Grassau Music School, the trombonist Wolfgang Diem, who was born in 1964, already early opened the musical opportunity for the students who profited from scholarships made available through the Bavarian Ministry of Culture. Together with Barbara Boschner and Hubert Holzner, he was a member of the Bavarian State Youth Orchestra for several years, after the trio had brought home twice, in 1979 and 1982, the national title from the event “Youth Is Creating Music”.

Since then, the Bavarian State Youth Orchestra has nearly always had young brass players from the Achen Valley among its members; the violinist Veronika Nedwed, who began studying violin at the Conservatory Würzburg, was a member of the German Music School Orchestra until recently. Annually, young musicians compete as soloists, in duos, and in groups at regional, state, and national competitions sponsored by the German Council for Music School Inspectors. 26 first prizes at the regional level, 15 first prizes at the state level, as well as five first prizes at the national level and numerous other national prizes are a result that is worth seeing or rather worth listening to.

A host of the former students meanwhile are leading a music school, an orchestra or a band, such as, Hubert Holzner (brass school and City Band Rottweil) or Otto Dufter (Music School Unterwössen, vice principal in Grassau). Many of them, after completing their musical studies, have become teachers at their former school or are members of renowned orchestras. Albert Osterhammer is bass clarinetist with the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra and Johannes Dengler, who captured the first prize at the national level at “Youth Is Creating Music”, bugler with the Bavarian State Opera. In addition, almost yearly, young people enthusiastic about music enroll in conservatory and universities to study instrumental performance and stay connected with their music for life.

Today

The most successful ensembles, which have made the market town of Grassau known beyond municipal and county boundaries certainly are the Grassau Brass Ensemble, the  “Scherzl Violinists”, the “Buxbaam-Musi”, the teacher big band Teachers’ Groove or the “Brasseco-Quintett”. The Grassau Market Band, which already has succeeded in performing and recording at the Bayrischer Rundfunk, recently was awarded the recognition “Gold with Distinction” at the International Brass Festival in Decin, Czech Republic. Also, the young piano duo Anne und Lukas Lewerentz, the trompeter  Christian Pertl and the pianist Julia Dobmeier (first prize at state level 2003), the bugler Mariulina Dietenhofer and the pianist Martina Windbichler (first prize at state level 2004) have had innumerable public and private musical appearances.
